Background of the study
Child labor remains a critical socio-economic issue that adversely affects educational development, particularly in regions with limited economic opportunities. In Asaba Local Government Area, Delta State, a significant number of children are engaged in labor activities that deprive them of educational opportunities and hinder their cognitive and social development. Recent literature has established that child labor not only disrupts formal education but also reinforces cycles of poverty and social exclusion (Obi, 2023; Nnamdi, 2024). Economic necessity often forces children into labor, where they may work in hazardous conditions with little or no access to schooling. This early entry into the workforce compromises their academic development and reduces their future prospects. The study explores the multifaceted effects of child labor on educational attainment, analyzing how labor-related responsibilities interfere with school attendance, concentration, and overall performance. By integrating qualitative interviews and quantitative educational data, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges that child labor poses to educational development in Asaba, thereby informing targeted interventions that address both economic and educational needs (Ifeanyi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Asaba, the prevalence of child labor has become a significant barrier to educational development. Children who are compelled to work often miss out on critical schooling, leading to lower literacy rates and diminished future employment opportunities. The immediate economic benefits of child labor for families come at the expense of long-term human capital development. This dual challenge is exacerbated by inadequate governmental enforcement of child labor laws and the limited availability of alternative income sources for families. The persistent practice of child labor contributes to a cycle of poverty and educational underachievement, undermining efforts to improve overall social and economic conditions. Despite various policy interventions, the problem remains widespread, and there is a lack of localized studies that comprehensively document its effects on educational outcomes. This study aims to fill that gap by examining the extent to which child labor interferes with education in Asaba, and by exploring potential strategies to mitigate its adverse impacts (Okon, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To assess the impact of child labor on school attendance and academic performance.
To analyze the socio-economic factors that contribute to child labor in Asaba.
To propose strategies to reduce child labor and promote educational development.
Research questions
How does child labor affect school attendance and academic performance?
What socio-economic factors contribute to the prevalence of child labor in Asaba?
What interventions can effectively reduce child labor and enhance educational development?
Research Hypotheses
Child labor significantly reduces school attendance and academic performance.
Socio-economic hardships are strongly correlated with the prevalence of child labor.
Interventions that provide alternative income opportunities will lead to improved educational outcomes.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the detrimental effects of child labor on educational development, providing evidence that can inform policies aimed at protecting children’s rights and promoting educational access. The findings will be of interest to educators, policymakers, and non-governmental organizations working to eradicate child labor and enhance learning opportunities (Adewale, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining the effect of child labor on educational development in Asaba Local Government Area, Delta State. It does not extend to other forms of child exploitation or regions, and relies on local data and interviews.
